Drew Arrieta (The Land Within Us)

Tell us more about yourself. What is your background?

I am a documentary photographer and artist based in Imnížaska Othúŋwe (also known as St. Paul, Minnesota). I see my work as an investigation into community, resilience, and humanity — often calling attention to race, climate, and class issues. I see my art as storytelling. My work has appeared in Vogue, NBC News, and the Columbia Journalism Review.

I began formally practicing art in 2020. Previously, I worked as a labor organizer for hotel workers, political campaigner, and concert producer for social causes. I moved the Twin Cities after being born and raised in New York City. All of these experiences contribute to my values and provide a foundation for my work.

How would you describe your art practice in three words?

Exploratory, open, and grounded
What is your favorite art medium to work with?

I work primarily in photography for its intimacy and reflection of humanity. Photography's willingness to reveal truths and bear witness, makes it the perfect medium for exploring humanity's adaptability and strength.

Please tell us about the artwork you are showing in The Land Within Us?

It's a photograph of an Azteca dance group during a Día de los Muertos celebration in 2021. One of the greatest gifts after moving to the Twin Cities has been witnessing different Latine Indigenous dance groups perform. The rhythmic beats and dancing connect me to my indigeneity. I feel my ancestor’s resilience during these traditional dances.

Are you working on anything new that we should know about? What’s next?

I'm in an experimental phase with video, motion design, and digital collages. I'm not sure how this work will present itself, but I'm excited to explore new mediums. I'm always fascinated by the strength and resilience of humans through race, climate, and class issues. I plan to continue lifting stories in this space.

Where can we find more of your artwork online?
